Odoo 20 does not bring any feature that makes all other improvements redundant. The strength of this version lies elsewhere: more and more components of Odoo work together as a whole. AI comes closer to daily work, field service and planning align better with each other, and production, inventory, sales, and accounting share more and more of the same information.

This makes Odoo 20 interesting for two groups. Companies that do not yet use Odoo get a broader and more cohesive ERP platform. Existing Odoo users gain new capabilities within the apps they already know.

In this blog, we discuss the main new functionalities of Odoo 20. We do not look at every technical change, but at improvements that you notice as a user, manager, or decision-maker in practice.

Odoo 20 is about better coherence

An ERP system does not get better by just adding more features. The real value arises when information flows through a process without unnecessary intermediate steps.

A sales order can for example lead to a delivery, a production order, and an invoice. A field service request can proceed to planning, material usage, time registration, and invoicing. A document can be directly linked to a customer, project, or employee. The less information needs to be manually transferred, the smaller the chance of errors.

That is the most important development in Odoo 20. The individual apps are not only becoming more extensive, but they also connect better with each other.

For new users, this means that Odoo is a serious alternative to a collection of separate systems. For existing users, it means that processes that were previously carried out with workarounds or additional connections are more often fitting as standard in Odoo.

AI is getting closer to daily work

AI is one of the most prominent themes in Odoo 20. However, it is not just about a chatbot that answers a question. Odoo is increasingly developing AI as an assistant that understands context, uses resources, and can prepare an action within a process.

AI agents with their own role

In Odoo 20, you can set up AI agents with their own instructions, skills, and information sources. An agent can for example be set up for customer service, internal knowledge, sales support, or financial analysis.

The agent works from Discuss. There you see the conversations, set your instructions, and manage the resources that the agent is allowed to use. This makes the configuration more understandable than when you have to do everything in a technical settings form.

An AI agent can therefore be more than a general information source. You determine which information is available, which procedures the agent follows, and which tasks fit within its role.

AI can prepare follow-up steps

Odoo 20 makes it possible to bring AI actions closer to existing processes. An agent can, for example, summarize information, prepare a task, draft a response, or gather data from a file.

The user remains responsible for the final decision. That is important. An agent that can independently modify data must have clear boundaries. Rights, access management, and controls remain just as important as the AI function itself.

Our vision is simple: use AI to reduce recurring thinking and searching work, but keep the responsibility for important decisions with people.

AI uses more types of sources

AI agents can work with documents, web pages, and articles from Knowledge. Information can be included as a source, and it can be made clearer where the information comes from in responses.

This is especially valuable for organizations with a lot of internal knowledge. Think of work instructions, product information, service procedures, sales agreements, and policy documents.

An employee does not have to search through folders, loose files, and old emails first. The agent helps to find the right information faster.

AI in Helpdesk and Marketing

AI also takes on a practical role in Helpdesk. Odoo can recognize similar tickets, so an employee can see more quickly how a previous question was resolved. AI can also assist with summaries and preparing responses.

In Marketing kan AI helpen bij het opzetten van campagnes en het maken van teksten. Daarmee wordt marketing niet volledig automatisch, maar wel sneller voorbereid.

The key lesson is that AI does not stand as a separate function next to Odoo. AI becomes part of existing processes.

Field service becomes an ongoing process

Field service is in many organizations more than just a schedule. There is a request, an appointment, a route, materials, a worksheet, time registration, and often an invoice. The more of those steps are carried out separately, the greater the administrative burden.

Odoo 20 brings these components closer together.

Service requests via the website

Customers can submit a service request via the website. The request does not immediately receive a definitive schedule. A planner can first assess the location, available capacity, desired timing, and required materials.

That is a better approach than allowing customers to directly choose a time slot without the organization knowing what the intervention entails. The request is first assessed and then scheduled.

Automatically scheduling based on location

Odoo 20 supports scheduling based on geolocation. This allows for better consideration of the distance between interventions when planning.

Voor organisaties met veel afspraken op een dag is dat een praktische verbetering. Een planning die op papier logisch lijkt, kan in werkelijkheid veel reistijd bevatten. Door locaties en routes mee te nemen, ontstaat een realistischer werkdag.

Materials and serial numbers on the intervention

Parts, equipment, and serial numbers can be recorded closer to the intervention. A service employee can better see what is needed on-site and which equipment has been used previously.

This helps with maintenance, warranty, and recurring service. The history is not only kept with the customer record but is linked to the actual execution.

Worksheets automatically save changes

Worksheets are used in the field service intervention to record measurements, comments, photos, and checks. In Odoo 20, changes are better saved during the filling out process.

That is a small improvement with a big practical effect. An employee does not have to be as afraid that a completed worksheet will be lost before the intervention is closed.

Maintenance contracts and subscriptions

Field service can be combined with subscriptions and maintenance contracts. A recurring appointment does not have to be set up as a separate process every time.

You can better connect the contractual agreement, planning, intervention, materials, and invoicing. This makes it easier to organize service based on a contract.

Production becomes more flexible before the work begins

Manufacturing companies want to plan early, but do not want to release every order as final immediately. Odoo 20 provides more space between preparation and execution.

Create production orders as drafts

A production order can first be created as a draft. You can then check the bill of materials, quantities, planning, and materials before the order is confirmed.

This is especially practical when an order is automatically generated from a sales order, supply rule, or planning. The planner maintains control over the moment when the shop floor is actually directed.

Include draft orders in the planning

Draft production orders can be included in the planning. This provides earlier insight into the future workload of work centers and employees.

Een planner hoeft dus niet te wachten tot alle orders definitief zijn voordat de capaciteitsplanning wordt gevuld. Tegelijk blijft duidelijk welke orders nog moeten worden gecontroleerd.

Reset production orders to draft

When a production order is not properly set up, it can be reverted to a draft status. This allows for adjustments to the bill of materials or schedule without immediately working with an incorrect order.

This aligns with the reality of production. Orders change, materials are unavailable, or a customer alters their demand. An ERP system must support such changes without users having to delete and recreate records.

Continuous production and backorders

Odoo 20 pays more attention to continuous production and backorders. Work that is carried out in multiple steps can therefore be better tracked.

A backorder is not just an administrative leftover. It is part of the planning. By making remaining work more visible, the planner knows which production still needs to be scheduled and what capacity is required for that.

Barcode on the work center

Work centers can be recognized with barcodes. Employees on the shop floor can therefore navigate more quickly to the correct workstation or operation.

In combination with Shop Floor and Barcode, a clearer working method emerges: scan, open the correct task, perform the operation, and register the progress.

Inventory and logistics become more action-oriented

Inventory management is not just about quantities. It is primarily about availability, timing, location, and priority.

Renewed replenishment proposals

Odoo 20 verbetert de manier waarop bevoorradingsvoorstellen worden opgebouwd. Onder andere dagelijkse vraag en magazijnspecifieke routes kunnen beter worden meegenomen.

This helps buyers and planners not only to react to a shortage but to see earlier which inventory will be needed soon.

Inventory focused allocation

Incoming stock can be specifically assigned to a sales order, production order, or other destination. This makes it clearer which part of a receipt already has a destination.

This is valuable when multiple customers are waiting for the same product. The stock is then not just "available", but must be linked to the correct order.

Batch and wave pickings

Batch and wave pickings are further improved. Warehouse employees can perform multiple tasks bundled together when that is more efficient.

The goal is not to make every warehouse operate the same. The right picking method depends on volume, product type, and order structure. Odoo 20 makes it easier to use those choices in daily operations.

Traceability becomes clearer

Traceability reports are easier to read. Lot numbers, serial numbers, locations, and linked movements can be viewed more specifically.

This is important in case of quality issues, recalls, and warranty questions. You want to quickly see where a product came from and where it has gone afterwards.

Barcode supports more actions

Barcode is becoming more widely applicable for, among other things:

  • generating serial numbers and lot numbers;

  • opening batches;

  • assigning stock;

  • packing products;

  • printing CMR documents;

  • recognizing work centers;

  • processing materials on a production order.

For warehouse employees, this means less searching on large screens and more actions directly on the shop floor.

Click & Collect and stock availability

The connection between the webshop and inventory becomes clearer. With Click & Collect, a customer needs to know if a product is actually available and where it can be picked up.

When a product is no longer available, it can be automatically hidden from the webshop. This prevents disappointment for customers and unnecessary questions to the sales department.

Sales and CRM become more flexible

Sales processes vary greatly by organization. A wholesaler operates differently than a consultancy, but both want to quickly create a clear quote.

Sales lines without product card

For a one-time service or a custom assignment, you do not always need to create a product card first. You can enter a sales line directly based on a description.

Dat is handig voor dienstverleners en bedrijven die regelmatig een unieke opdracht uitvoeren. Tegelijk blijft het mogelijk om producten verplicht te stellen wanneer productbeheer de basis van je verkoopproces is.

Product catalog in quote templates

The product catalog can be used when creating quote templates. Salespeople can select products and services faster without constantly switching between screens.

This makes templates more practical for organizations with many standard quotes and different combinations of products.

Combos and menus

Products can be offered as a combination or menu. This is interesting for hospitality, retail, and companies that sell bundled packages.

The customer sees a logical offer, while the underlying rules in the sales order continue to be processed correctly.

Loyalty points can expire

Loyalty works better when points do not exist indefinitely. Odoo 20 makes it possible for loyalty points to expire.

This prevents old points from remaining in the administration for years and gives customers a clear reason to reorder in a timely manner.

Sales, project and subscription

A sales order can better align with a project, task, or subscription. This is important for services: the sale is not the endpoint, but the beginning of the execution.

For example, a customer purchases a service, after which a project or task is automatically created. Hours, planning, progress, and invoicing remain connected to the original sale.

Website and e-commerce become stronger

Odoo 20 improves not only the backend. Website visitors also notice changes in navigation, product information, and contact options.

Laat AI helpen bij het bouwen van webpagina’s

With AI, you can describe changes to web pages in plain language. The AI can, for example, adjust a section, prepare content, or build a form.

The user continues to control the change. This is important because a website is not just a technical environment. Texts, structure, and conversion require human assessment.

AI chat on product pages

An AI chat on a product page can assist visitors with questions about products, usage, and available information.

Dit werkt alleen goed wanneer productdata, documenten en Knowledge-artikelen betrouwbaar zijn. AI kan ontbrekende productinformatie niet vervangen.

Better SEO and structured data

Odoo 20 uses structured data for products, blogs, events, and breadcrumbs, among other things. This allows search engines to better understand what a page contains.

Multilingual SEO settings are also managed more clearly. This is relevant for companies serving different markets.

Searching for products with a barcode

Webshop and product management become more practical through support for searching with barcodes. This helps when employees need to quickly access a product card or sales information.

Show prices and VAT more clearly

Price lists can more flexibly determine how tax information is displayed. This is relevant for companies with different customer groups or sales channels.

A private individual expects a price including VAT, while a business customer often wants to see an exclusive amount. Odoo can better support that context.

Accounting gains more control

Many accounting improvements are less noticeable than a new website feature. Yet they have a daily impact on reliability and speed.

New matching rules

Bank reconciliation becomes more flexible through new matching rules. Odoo can better link transactions to outstanding items and recurring patterns.

The goal is not for every booking to be processed blindly and automatically. The goal is for the accountant to spend less time on predictable actions and more attention on exceptions.

Better track payments

Payment statuses can be updated faster via webhooks. This reduces the need for manual checks to see if a payment has actually been received.

Starting payments also gets a clearer procedure. This is important for organizations that use multiple payment methods and payment providers.

Intercompany and analytical reporting

For organizations with multiple companies, comparisons and intercompany bookings are further improved.

Additionally, analytical distributions can be better taken from forecasts and other sources. This makes reports more useful for managers who look not only at general ledger accounts but also at projects, departments, and activities.

Reverse charge and Peppol

Odoo 20 improves the processing of reverse charge VAT and makes Peppol error messages clearer.

Such improvements may seem small, but a clear error message can save a lot of search time. A user needs to know which part of an invoice or shipment needs to be adjusted.

Point of Sale for retail and hospitality

Point of Sale receives improvements for both employees and customers.

Self-order and dynamic QR codes

Self-order becomes more flexible with dynamic QR codes and payment options after the meal. A customer can, for example, order at the table and pay later.

Automatically process service charges

A fixed or percentage service fee can be automatically added to an order. This means the cashier does not have to calculate it themselves, and the processing in the accounting remains the same.

Make table duration visible

The restaurant floor plan can show how long a table has been active. This gives employees insight into occupancy without having to open each order individually.

POS remains usable during an open session

Payment methods can be adjusted while a session is open. This gives administrators more flexibility when a payment provider or method changes.

Documents, Knowledge, and Sign

Document management is becoming increasingly important in ERP. An organization wants to know not only which order exists, but also which documents, agreements, and approvals are associated with it.

Automatically link documents

Documenten kunnen beter aan projecten, HR-records en andere bedrijfsrecords worden gekoppeld. Daardoor blijft informatie dichter bij de plek waar ze nodig is.

Knowledge and whiteboards

Knowledge can be combined with visual collaboration via whiteboards. This makes it easier to keep processes, schedules, and work instructions together.

Signing becomes more verifiable

Odoo 20 makes it easier to:

  • download partially signed documents;

  • view all requests from a contact;

  • search and group signature fields;

  • seal completed documents;

  • sign qualified with itsme.

The recognizability of the actually signed sales document is also improved. A later re-generated PDF does not automatically receive the old signature again.

Planning and appointments

Planning is not only used for field service. Internal teams, meetings, and appointments also benefit from improvements.

Multiple calendars per user

Users can combine and synchronize multiple calendars with Google Calendar or Outlook. This is practical for employees who use different calendars for work, projects, or teams.

Capacity per appointment

For appointments, a maximum capacity can be set per time interval. This is useful for training, group sessions, reservations, and other activities where not only employees but also processing capacity forms a limit.

Move appointments without loss

When moving, the existing appointment remains until a new time is confirmed. If the process is aborted, the original appointment is retained.

This gives customers and employees more certainty.

HR en medewerkersbeheer

There are also new possibilities outside of payroll that employees notice directly.

Biometric attendance registration

Odoo 20 supports generic biometric attendance integrations. This allows attendance to be recorded via suitable equipment.

Breaks and attendances

Employees can register breaks from the kiosk. The assessment of attendances is also made more accessible from the systray.

Time rules and work schedules

Attendance, leave, and work entries are processed more consistently through consecutive time rules. Work schedules thus have a clearer role in the calculation of worked time and absence.

Voor HR betekent dat vooral minder uitzonderingen die achteraf handmatig moeten worden opgelost.

Marketing and communication

Marketing is better connected with sales, CRM, and website.

Social posts from Odoo

You can link personal LinkedIn accounts and schedule Facebook and Instagram stories. Also, comments, character counts, image order, and AI assistance with posts are improved.

UTM information becomes more useful

Odoo distinguishes between general sources like LinkedIn and the specific mailing, social post, or campaign that generated the lead.

This helps marketing teams not only see where a lead comes from but also which specific campaign yields results.

Dynamic mailing lists

A mailing list can be based on a filter. Contacts are automatically added or removed when they no longer meet the criteria.

This prevents lists from needing to be updated manually all the time.

SMS en mailingtemplates

SMS messages can be scheduled from the composer and mailing templates can be reused more easily.

Projects and external collaboration

Projects become more accessible to customers and external partners.

You can better determine which external users may view, edit, or be assigned tasks. Tracking, collaborating, and access to project information are more clearly separated from each other.

This is useful for installation companies, consulting organizations, and service providers who want to give customers access without fully exposing internal project information.

What does Odoo 20 mean for new users?

For companies that do not yet use Odoo, the breadth of the platform is particularly interesting. You get not only an accounting package, CRM, or inventory program, but an environment where these processes work together.

That does not mean you have to implement all apps at once. A phased approach remains wiser. Start with the processes where the most transfer, duplicate work, or lack of insight exists.

An organization can, for example, start with CRM, Sales, and Accounting. A manufacturing company will likely start with Sales, Inventory, and MRP. A service company may benefit more from Helpdesk, Planning, Field Service, and Timesheets.

The new functionalities of Odoo 20 are only valuable when they align with a clear working method.

What does Odoo 20 mean for existing users?

For existing users, these questions are especially important:

  • Which functions are we currently using through customization?

  • Which integrations are still needed?

  • Which processes can be set up as standard?

  • Which rights need to be adjusted?

  • Which data is suitable as a source for AI?

  • Which old workarounds can be eliminated?

  • Which users need to be retrained?

An upgrade is therefore not just a technical conversion. It is also a good time to see which processes can now be organized differently.

Those who only convert the database and do not assess the new functions only utilize part of the new version.

Odoo 20 requires choices

The amount of new possibilities can be tempting. However, it is not wise to activate every function immediately.

AI agents need good sources and clear access rights. Automatic replenishment requires reliable inventory and product data. Planning based on geolocation only works when addresses are correct. Reports are only valuable when the underlying registration is accurate.

Therefore, we at Odoo Experts advise asking three questions:

  1. What problem are we solving with this?

  2. What data and responsibilities are needed?

  3. Does standard Odoo fit this process or is customization demonstrably necessary?

Standard Odoo remains the starting point. Customization or an integration is logical when it solves a concrete business problem and remains manageable.

Conclusion: Odoo 20 primarily strengthens the connection.

Odoo 20 brings many new functionalities. However, the most important development is not a separate button or app. It is the way in which processes are becoming increasingly interconnected.

AI helps within existing workflows. Field service connects to planning, inventory, and invoicing. Production orders can be prepared earlier. Inventory is allocated better. Sales, projects, and subscriptions work more together. Documents, signing, and Knowledge remain closer to the process.

For new Odoo users, this means a broader platform with fewer separate systems. For existing users, Odoo 20 offers opportunities to replace old workarounds with standard functionality.
