Odoo vs Magento and WordPress

Odoo is one of the many players in the website builder market. We list the differences between the main players.

Odoo

Like WordPress, Magento and WooCommerce, Odoo has the right tools for creating a website or a complete webshop. The Odoo website builder makes it possible to build a website using ready-made building blocks. No technical knowledge is required for this. WordPress, Magento and WooCommerce are similar platforms, but there are certainly important differences as well.

WordPress

WordPress can be highly customized to meet almost all website needs. It can handle everything from car dealerships to blogs, news sites and e-commerce stores. Advanced features such as email marketing and A/B testing, however, must be purchased separately.

Magento

Odoo and Magento are both website builders, but they show major differences in approach. Odoo opts for an all-in-one approach, bundling dozens of business management modules into one platform. For example, Odoo functionality or the Odoo modules that are provided are not available in Magento. To expand the functionality within Magento, you can usually do so by writing code.  Magento is a platform mainly focused on e-commerce. Thanks to its advanced features, it is one of the most widely used e-commerce solutions. However, Magento is less suitable for blogs or ERP sites. There are, however, plug-ins that make it easy to integrate most e-commerce tasks.

WooCommerce: WooCommerce is a plug-in for WordPress that can turn any WordPress site into a robust online store. There are hundreds of free and paid extensions that offer advanced e-commerce functionality. These include payment providers such as Stripe and PayPal, as well as shipping providers such as UPS.

Behind the scenes: development

Odoo: Odoo developers use Python and PostgreSQL. Python is the fourth most popular programming language among developers.

WordPress: WordPress uses PHP and MySQL. PHP ranks 9th on the TIOBE index and offers plenty of opportunities to find developers.

Magento: Magento also runs on PHP and has a very active developer community. There are more than 150,000 Magento developers worldwide. The Magento Community forums have more than 286,000 members.

WooCommerce: The open-source WooCommerce plug-in has more than 350 core developers. In addition, there are millions of PHP and WordPress developers, many of them with WooCommerce development experience.

Pricing

Odoo: With Odoo, you can already create a website for free with the 1 app free license. As a result, Odoo's licensing costs are minimal. If you want more, you pay about € 30 to € 40 per month. An additional advantage is that your website can also be hosted via Odoo. Let's take a closer look at the similarities and differences between the Odoo website builder and other Open Source platforms.

WordPress: The open-source version of the software package is completely free. Hosting or extra services from WordPress.com start at 4 euros per month.

Magento: Magento Open-Source offers a free option for building an online store. Magento Commerce Starter costs USD 2,000 per month. Magento Commerce Pro starts at $ 3,417 per month.

WooCommerce: WooCommerce is free. This allows companies of any size to build their online store easily and affordably. Extensions that offer various functions are available for free or for a fee in the extension store.

Market share

Odoo: Odoo has 5 million users. ERP features make Odoo a popular website builder.

WordPress: WordPress powers 29% of websites on the internet. It continues to grow, with 84.9 million new posts on WordPress sites every month.

Magento: More than 300,000 companies use Magento around the world. Thanks to developers around the world, new e-commerce developments are constantly becoming available to users.

WooCommerce: WooCommerce has more than 37 million downloads. Estimates of WooCommerce's market share range from 15% to more than 45%. Needless to say, it is still one of the strongest e-commerce options.

As demands and requirements increase, the possibilities within Odoo increase as well. Odoo includes advanced features such as email marketing and A/B testing that work right out of the box. This gives users an easier way to use these advanced features than when they have to be developed through various plug-ins or as custom work.
