What is Odoo?

What is Odoo?

What is Odoo's mission?

Odoo's mission is to create intuitive software, can support all business processes, is fully integrated, and can be effortlessly upgraded so that everything runs smoothly for every business and user.

What is Odoo's vision?

Odoo's vision is that you should put users first. Business software users have changed. Where accounting is central in old ERP systems, Odoo focuses on the users (customers, suppliers, employees). Odoo does this by integrating all business processes into one ERP system, so no complicated links are required. The full focus is on simplicity and user-friendliness, so that users can work optimally.

What is the history of Odoo?

What is the Odoo history? Odoo was founded in 2002 by Fabien Pinckaers. Fabien's dream was to lead the Enterprise management market with a fully open-source software product. He also wanted to have 100 employees, at a self-funded company, before he was 30 years old. He succeeded in this, except for a few months.

Fabien started in 2005 with his first version of Odoo under the name TinyERP (small ERP system). Three years later, Fabien discovered that you cannot change the world when you are "small". Especially if the United States is part of this world, where it is better to be a BigERP rather than a TinyERP. Can you imagine how small you feel in front of Danone's directors; "But why should we pay millions of dollars for a small software package?" So Fabien changed the name TinyERP to OpenERP.

OpenERP grew, but not fast enough. In 2014, Odoo raised $10 million in funding to boost its marketing and sales activities. To support the vision, it was necessary to change a name that is not limited to ERP functions. A new name was needed that could support the ambitions; A simple and user-friendly software package where customers and users of the system are central. In May 2014, the company and product name was changed to Odoo.

Another important decision was made when changing the company name to Odoo. Odoo has decided to make the software partially paid. Odoo has since come in two versions. The free community version and the paid enterprise version. This decision has caused Odoo to grow explosively. The paid version was the engine for financing the further growth of the product and the Odoo company.

By the end of 2022, Odoo will employ nearly 3000 people in offices around the world. Currently, (2022) Odoo is growing by 3 employees per day.

What is possible with Odoo?

Odoo has more than 30 Apps, suitable for many business processes. Odoo integrates as many business processes as possible in one system. Odoo has developed an App for every process. By integrating everything, you use the same system, the same information and no complicated links are required. The possibilities with Odoo are endless. Odoo has modules for:

What is the difference between the Community and Enterprise version?

Odoo Enterprise has more functionality and support from Odoo. The Community version of Odoo is free for everyone to use. The Community version contains about 80% of all the functionality of Odoo. The remaining 20% is part of the Enterprise version. The Enterprise version is therefore more extensive than the Community version and logically comes with a price tag.
The costs for the Enterprise version are not only for the software, but also for the extra services of Odoo. Then you can think of costs for hosting (at Odoo Online) and migrations, for example. The trend is that with every new version of Odoo many new functionalities are only made available for Odoo Enterprise. The Odoo Enterprise version really has an advantage in that area.

Is Odoo Open-source?

Odoo Community is Open Source, but Odoo Enterprise is not open source. Odoo comes in the free community version, this version has an LGPL open-source license. The source code is public and you can find here. Odoo Enterprise is released under a non-open source license. This means that you are not allowed to distribute the Odoo Enterprise software. If you have an Enterprise license, you can still access the source code. The source code is therefore "open" to the end user.
